The Best Cruise Destinations for Luxury Travelers

You probably already know different cruise lines cater to different types of passengers. Some are better for families, others aim to please couples. Regardless of where you find yourself, picking the right carrier can make a big difference.

But then you'll need to figure out where to go. And we think that can be the most exciting part of all. We've included a few of our favorites in hopes that you find the best cruise destinations for you.

1. Eastern Caribbean

You probably know it best for the Bahamas. But the eastern Caribbean islands have a lot to offer. We think its one of the best cruise destinations, especially for those sailing from the U.S. These beautiful beaches and tropical locations are only a short cruise trip away from many ports.

But they offer a new sensation not found even on breathtaking American mainland coasts. There is something special about the Caribbeans. First of all, there is the natural beauty of the beaches. And the clear blue oceans seem to stretch on forever. It is easy to relax on these getaway islands and forget about life back home. If you're looking for a place to relax and recharge, we think these offer great options.

In addition to the always popular Bahamas, several other islands have frequent cruise access. Some of the best cruise destinations in this region include the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. We also recommend St. Marten as well as Turks and Caicos. Whether you plan to have a few daiquiris or just work on your tan, you'll find what you want.

2. Galapagos Islands

Another great location for travelers looking to bathe in the sun are the awe inspiring Galapagos Islands. But we think this is among the best cruise destinations for another reason. The elusive and impressive display of wildlife on these islands is practically unmatched.

If you choose to disembark here, you have plenty of chances to interact with nature. Many endangered and native species call these islands home. You can find sea lions, giant tortoises and incredible island penguins. There are also hosts of amphibians and reptiles to suit anyone's taste for wild creatures.

We think this tropical location in South America is one of the ultimate cruise getaways. First of all, you can have all the benefits of an island trip. Plus, your vacation can include a meet and greet with some animals you might never see again.

3. Antarctica

You might not immediately think of Antarctica as among the best cruise destinations. Well, we think that is precisely what earns it a spot. First of all, you'll have the instant ability to talk about an experience most of your friends won't understand. Talk about the glacial views, penguins, the rocky seas and the entire adventure.

The best other seafaring vacationers can talk about is a tropical paradise or European wine tour. But you will have this unique experience few humans have ever accomplished. Plus, heading to Antarctica by cruise ship is much easier than other forms of travel. You'll have access to all the equipment needed for a safe exploration of the frigid continent.

Then you're back on your way to civilization. Sure, this might be a vacation you'll only need to take once in your life. If you've already tried all the hot spots, though, it might be time to cool down for your next cruise.

4. Hawaii

We've already covered a few islands. And many of the best cruise destinations are not island bound trips. But we know Hawaii deserves as spot, so we're going to include it here. Whether you've been to the island state or not, if you haven't cruised there we think you should.

Not only is the culture unparalleled, it offers some of the most impressive natural features. From its stunning beaches to volcanic mountains, you can find plenty to do. And visiting the excursion points on a particular cruise vacation can have benefits. They can be modified to avoid any potential issues like volcanic activity.

Hawaii certainly has something for anybody in your group. But we think it is especially attractive to couples. There is just something inherently romantic about a trip to Hawaii. It is easy to stoke new passion or rekindle an old flame. And unlike a long plane trip, you can cruise in luxury so the travel time really is part of the fun.

5. The Nile River

The best cruise destinations give travelers something they can't get elsewhere. Well, a cruise along the Nile River has that in spades. First of all, it's a river. This is a much different experience than taking a cruise in the open seas. There are sights along the way for an added sensory stimulation along the way.

And those sights, by the way, are some of the most historically significant in the world. Some cruise routes will allow you a close look at some absolutely fascinating monuments. One of our favorite routes in the world is along the Nile River. It spans from Aswan to Luxor and packs in an insane amount of culture and history.

You'll have access to guides to explain the relevance of each of these locations. And whether you're on the cruise ship or off, there's never a dull moment.

6. Danube River

It's clear we like Egypt's famed Nile River. But Europe has its own incredible waterways. And one of our favorites is the Danube. There are incredible stops along the way and sights as you sail down the river.

You can see things like the vineyards found throughout the Wachau Valley. The Chain Bridge in Budapest always pleases travelers. One of the best cruise destinations is Vienna. We think the beautiful architecture on display is unparalleled.

Then there is the natural beauty. Three rivers converge at Passau, which is another must see feature. And the Danube Bend is another exquisite spot for sight seeing and picture taking.

7. Quebec City

We're including Quebec City as somewhat of a spoiler. Our list of the best cruise destinations includes several locations you would probably expect. But unless you're familiar with the beauty of this spot, you might be surprised.

First of all, there is the obvious cultural distinction. While it is in many ways a Canadian city, its French influence is unmistakable. You'll have access to unique cuisine and some of the country's most important architecture.

For Catholic travelers and those interested in religion, there is the Holy Door. It is the only one on the continent. Old Quebec dates back centuries and still leaves remnants of that old civilization. There is the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac hotel and other iconic landmarks. Then there is the 1608 Wine and Cheese Bar, which is always a great place to soak up the scenery. But we think the cobblestone Place Royale gives visitors the best immersion into what makes Quebec City great.

8. Arles

Maybe Quebec City isn't quite ancient -- or French -- enough for your tastes. In that case, we have you covered. One of the all time best cruise destinations is Arles in France. This is an incredibly old city dense in rich national history.

There are ruins from the Roman Empire still available for viewing. And the ancient Arles Amphitheater is still operated to this day! But it's not just the man made features that make this one of our favorite getaways.

And if you love art, we think this might be one of the best places to visit. The nature itself will probably inspire your creative spirit. In fact, that's exactly what it did for Vincent Van Gogh. After spending a year and a half there creating some of his best work, he left behind a legacy. And you can still visit a historical monument dedicated to his contributions.

Some of the best cruise destinations might make you wonder why you'd travel any other way.

We've selected a few of our favorites. But there are so many others tucked away all around the world. If you enjoy taking cruises, then you have plenty of options. And we hope you'll find you own special getaway.
