Fashion is fascinating, and it’s liberating to see how far a brand has come to reach its success.

We’re taking a look at the history of Gucci and expressing the facts and background of the brand which make it what it is today. Without the passionate and enthusiastic workers, we wouldn’t be blessed with such luxurious fashion and accessories. But all of that came with hard work and controversy. Let's dig deeper into the history of Gucci.

Who Founded Gucci? When Was Gucci Founded?

Guccio Gucci founded the Gucci brand in Florence, Italy in 1920. He opened the first Gucci shop and became renowned for his high-quality leather goods and fine craftsmanship. In 1953, Guccio Gucci passed away and his four sons joined the company.

His life prior to creating the brand was very fascinating. He left Italy in 1893 to travel to Paris and London. On his way to return to Florence, he began selling saddles and saddlebags. However, due to the rise in automobiles, he branched out into other accessories to grow with the market. When it was time to found his own leather goods company, they featured inspiration from London and local craftsmanship from Tuscan artisans.

Consequently, his reputation grew quickly. International clients visited the store in Florence to buy bags, trunks, gloves, shoes and belts. With a demand for riding gear, he created the Horsebit icon. Ten years’ later, he created the loafer shoe and the business ended up expanding to Rome.

With a lack of supplies, Guccio Gucci experimented with hemp, linen and jute. The creation of the Bamboo Bag was inspired by a saddle’s shape and became one of the brand’s popular creations. Towards the fifties, he saw inspiration for the green red green web stripe which came from a traditional saddle girth.

The family continued fighting and working hard for the company’s success, despite disputes over inheritance and daily operations. Towards the sixties, Gucci’s products became renowned for their unique designs. Liz Taylor, Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy and Peter Sellers are just a handful of iconic stars who sported Gucci accessories. From scarfs to bags, the brand quickly became recognized for setting a high standard in the fashion industry.

Historical Overview of Gucci

There’s no doubt that the history of Gucci is fascinating, and it’s become one of the most recognized and luxurious fashion brands to date. In 1936, the first signature Gucci print was invented, and used imported materials rather than leather goods. Two years’ later, the brand expanded to Rome on Via Condotti. By 1940, Gucci faced a tough time as leather became in short supply. Instead, they focused on using new materials, and the Gucci Bamboo bag first stepped onto the scene at this time.

Eleven years’ later, Guccio Gucci’s son opened the first store in Milan, on Via Montenapoleone. During this year, the signature red and green brand became the hallmark colours for the brand. When Guccio Gucci died at 72, he sons Aldo, Vasco, Ugo and Rodolfo took over the development. Unfortunately, Guccio Gucci never got to see the opening of the New York store in Savoy Plaza Hotel.

After Guccio Gucci’s death, the intertwined double G’s became the new registered trademark. The new owners worked on adding this to all leather goods and items of clothing. Thanks to the brand’s continued success, they moved to New York on Fifth Avenue, next to The St. Regis Hotel. They also opened stores in Florida, London and Beverly Hills. During this era, the brand really established itself in the celebrity community, and Jackie Kennedy Onassis wore the Gucci shoulder bad which became titled the ‘Jackie O’ bag.

Prying away from clothes and accessories, Gucci branched out into perfume, and in the 1970’s, the first Gucci perfume entered. At this point, the brand reached new heights and opened another store in New York dedicated to solely clothing.

How Has the Gucci Brand Changed?

If you look at the history of Gucci, it’s completely transformed from a leather-good accessory store to a high-end brand. Since Tom Ford took over in the 1990’s and brought the brand to new heights, it’s brought more fun back to fashion. There are now new fashion trends we’re seeing thanks to Gucci taking risks. Ensemble dressing, patchwork denim and rainbow patterns are just a few of their signature looks. They’re recognized as a brand which isn’t scared to take risks and challenge what ‘normal fashion’ should look like.

The brand’s mood has drastically changed and is no longer creating clothes which are versatile, but garments which are risky. Fashion isn’t just about practicality and covering up your body, but expressing your personality and setting an example to others. Whereas the brand once created a minimalist mood, the new Gucci look is optimistic and eclectic. They no longer use expected pattern and colour combinations, but are more daring.
