The Leick corner computer desk is not a large workstation, but it does the trick in a pinch.
When you think of the best office desks you can have, we all tend to think bigger is better. Whether it’s something like the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office or perhaps something sleek and futuristic, the ideal desk takes up some serious space. However, we don’t always have a lot of space to work with. This is what makes the product we are reviewing so special. The Leick corner computer desk is a small, sturdy desk that can fit in almost any space. It’s not a large workstation. A laptop and a notebook are about all that can reasonably fit on it, but sometimes that’s enough.
In this review, we’re going to talk about who makes the desk, who can most benefit rom this desk, and how it holds up under use. Furniture, however, isn’t exactly like other products. There are practical concerns, taste concerns, and price concerns. This desk is an affordable piece that comes in at least five different colors and style and could likely match most décors. The Leick corner computer desk is a piece that is so simple that it just sort of blends into the mood of the room. It’s not a conversation piece, but rather a functional desk that tries to stay out of the way.
A Little About Leick Home Furniture
Leick Home Furniture is a Wisconsin-based, family-owned company. They claim to be more than a hundred years old, but their website doesn’t feature an “about” section. The Lux Authority reached out to Leick Home Furniture but didn’t get a response by press time. Greg Leick, formerly a Vice President for BancOne/Chase, became the CEO of the company in 1993 and still serves in that role. In 2003, about ten years into his tenure, he told the Journal-Sentinel that Leick gets their wood from Indiana and then sent it to China for manufacturing. The disassembled pieces are sent back to Leick Home Furniture for distribution. Still, while the company may not be very transparent about their history, their products seem to speak for themselves.
What Kind of Furniture Do They Make?
Leick Home Furniture specializes in furniture made from “real wood.” They make dozens of different pieces, from piano benches to tables to cabinets to whatever you can think of. The pieces have a custom-made feel, even though they are mass-produced pieces that you assemble at home. The high-quality materials mean you get a nice compromise between old-fashioned craftmanship while still being portable and easy to ship. Leick Home Furniture promise sturdy, wobble-free pieces. However, some of that depends on your skill in assembling them. At least with the Leick corner computer desk, all of the bolts are the same size and there are anchors in the bolt-holes to help ensure most people get a secure fit.
What Is the Leick Corner Computer Desk?
This particular piece of furniture is designed to sit in a corner or other out-of-the-way place in a room. While Leick Home Furniture does design large, centerpiece desks, this is not one of those. The Leick corner computer desk sits at about 30 inches tall, four feet long and two feet wide. It has a wedge shape to fit in the corner, but can fit a monitor, keyboard, and mouse on the surface. Made from oak and plywood, you can choose from five different styles: chocolate oak, mission oak, burnished oak, dark oak with cast-iron legs, and black. From these options, at least one could fit in with almost any design or style in a room. Ideal for kids’ rooms, shared rooms, or small homes.
Who is the Leick Corner Computer Desk for?
If you like to spread out papers, books, devices, and other things while you work, the Leick corner computer desk is not for you. This is basically a “writing desk,” which means it’s only large enough to sit down and write a letter on. Today, of course, we write our (E-)letters on electronic devices. This desk is big enough for a flat-screen monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Beyond that, you don’t have much room on the desk itself. That means that this makes the Leick corner computer desk better-suited to the family room and casual internet browsing or game-playing. It would work in a kid’s room, though big homework projects would still have to be relegated to the kitchen table. Also, at slightly over 30 inches tall, this desk would likely be uncomfortable for taller individuals. Also, it need not hold a computer at all. In fact, this might make an excellent entertainment stand for TVs up to about 50 inches.
Features & Benefits of The Leick Corner Computer Desk
Now that we know about the desk and where it comes from, we can dig into actually using it. As mentioned above, the Leick corner computer desk is comparatively small. Still, we’re going to take a much closer look, so you can know if this piece of furniture has a place in your home or office.
1. The Size
When we mention “size” with respect to the Leick corner computer desk, we’re referring to how it fits in a space. Obviously, as the name states, this desk is designed to fit into a corner. However, it doesn’t have to be stuck in the corner like a naughty child. This desk isn’t a big enough piece to anchor a room, but it would fit great anywhere else that could use a desk. In fact, you could maybe anchor a room around a pair, three, or even four of these desks opposite each other. It would work well in a collaborative environment where there isn’t a lot of space. The greatest feature this desk has going for it is that it doesn’t take up a lot of space. Four feet at its widest, this desk can work in almost any space. Thought, be warned, that sitting at it may not be comfortable for people more than six feet tall.
Some of the negative reviews on the Amazon page for the Leick corner computer desk accuse the company of using particle-board. However, the actual pieces seem to be made of select hardwood pieces and plywood with an oak veneer. Nonetheless, it adds up to a sturdy piece of furniture, so long as you can handle the final bits of assembling. Most of the pieces come assembled, and all you have to really worry about are the legs. The bolts are meant to line up with metal anchors inside the holes. Some folks report missing screws or missing anchors. Still, one person should be able to handle assembling this piece. Most folks report spending about ten minutes or less on this step. Once together, reviewers often say they feel like this is a piece of furniture that will withstand heavy use and last a long time.
3. Surface Area
Since “corner” is in its name, the Leick corner computer desk can’t be accused of falsely boasting about its size. This piece is designed to take up little space, but still offer enough surface area to be a sufficient workstation. The desk can definitely hold a laptop or monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse comfortably. Adding other things, such as a phone or paperwork or anything really, and the real estate gets a little crowded. The center drawer does pull out and fold down, so you do end up with some extra desk space. It doesn’t seem like that would lend itself to a natural place for the keyboard or mouse. But, if you needed to store some paperwork or a book, it is a great place for that. And, because it’s a drawer, you can easily tuck it away to get back to typing.
4. Multiple Uses
Anywhere space is at a premium, the Leick corner computer desk might be the answer you are looking for. As mentioned above, this doesn’t have to be a work desk. It could actually serve as a corner-based entertainment stand. A decent-sized television would fit nicely on the desk, and the large open shelves on the bottom could hold cable boxes, Blu Ray players, or Game systems. This would be great for kids’ rooms or small apartments. It also could work as a computer desk in a family or common room. These desks could also make the most of a small, communal workspace. The wedge design allows for a number of inobtrusive configurations. Also, if you use your office for anything other than desk-work, this out-of-the-way workstation could be exactly what you need. Still, anyone who needs to spread out while working will likely not find this a useful computer desk.
What People Are Saying About the Leick Corner Computer Desk
On the Amazon page for this product, 83 percent rate this product five stars with an additional ten percent rating it four stars. Of the few negative reviews that are there, people seem to mostly be complaining about poor quality control leading to misassembled or missing pieces. There are also a number of complaints that the desk itself was damaged, cosmetically, during shipping. However, other reviewers comment on how securely packed in Styrofoam their desks were when they arrived. The vast majority of folks who reviewed this product seem very pleased with it.
What seems to please most of those who left rave reviews is that what they say is essentially what they got. While it appears that Leick Home Furniture could do more to address the concerns of folks who get damaged products, most of their customers seem very satisfied.
Alternatives to the Leick Corner Computer Desk to Consider
There are three reasons why you might seek an alternative to this desk. The first is that it’s simply too small for your needs. The second is that the style doesn’t work for you. The third is that while you need a small desk, you need more space than this provides. Take a look at the options below and see if these other options aren’t more your speed.
This minimalist desk is perfect for people who need room to spread out, but not a lot of places to store documents and supplies. It's constructed out of glass and metal, with a sleek L-shaped design that can also tuck into a corner. Of course, this desk has a much larger surface area to work with, while still not taking up a lot of space. There are no drawers or even shelves, and the glass top runs the risk of scratches or cracks. Still, this is an out-of-the-way desk that has more space and a different style than the Leick corner computer desk.
This desk isn’t as small as the Leick corner computer desk, but it’s not a huge desk either. This seems like the sort of desk that would be at home in the studies of great people throughout history like Benjamin Franklin or Winston Churchill. The unique oval design leaves a small footprint, but there is plenty of room for storage. The Britannia Rose could definitely anchor a room. This cool desk also comes with a cabinet and bookshelf in a matching style so what you need can be close at hand without cluttering your work-space.
If your workspace is small but the Leick corner computer desk doesn’t work for you, the Prepac “Floating” Desk just might. This innovative design, which comes in both black and brown, hangs on the wall and won't get in anyone's way. The fold-down desk offers a little more space to work, and there are even small storage areas on the side for supplies or files. The desk has to be mounted to the wall, so it is sturdy. However, set-up could be a challenge.
The Leick corner computer desk is a great option when space is a concern or if you don’t need a large desk for work.
This is for those who need a small desk that can hold a computer, television, or just a place to sit and work. If the surface area of the desk doesn’t discourage you, the Leick corner computer desk might just be the piece of furniture your home office needs. Especially if your home office is just a corner of your bedroom, a place to work that doesn’t take up too much space is ideal. An affordable price, it’s almost worth it just to try it out.
