Amazon is one of the most popular online stores.

It’s the go-to for everything. Many flock to the site for its large selection and competitive pricing, but not everything on there is cheap. Let’s take a look at the most expensive items on Amazon and who they’re suited for.

The History of Amazon

Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 as an e-commerce company based in Seattle, Washington. You’ll likely remember that it started out as an online bookstore which quickly diversified by adding video games, electronics, music and DVDs. It initially promised to deliver any book to any reader anywhere in the world. Time magazine named Bezos the Person of the Year just five years after Amazon's launch.

Bezos argued that Amazon was not just a retailer of consumer products, but a technology company which simplified online transactions for customers. During its early days, doubters claimed that Amazon would lose in the marketplace to established bookselling chains. However, Bezos had the slogan ‘Get Big Fast’ printed on employee t-shirts to prove naysayers wrong. In December 1996, the company had reached 180,000 customer accounts after its first year in operation.

One year later, it had 1,000,000 customer accounts and jumped from $15.7 million to $148 million in a year. By 1998, the company increased to $610 million. The company rapidly expanded in other areas, selling more than books. By 1999, they were selling electronics, home-improvement gadgets, toys and games, and much more.

Beyond an Online Shop

Bezos claimed that Amazon was a technology company and not just an online retailer. To prove his point, in 2002, the company launched Amazon Web Services (AWS). This offered data on Internet traffic patterns. Four years later, the company expanded its portfolio with Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). This rents out computer processing power.

In 2007, Amazon began to sell its own Kindle e-readers to help boost the e-book market. By 2011, the company introduced the Kindle Fire which constituted 50 percent of the tablets sold that used Google’s Android mobile operating system. Two years later, they enabled individuals to publish their own e-books on their Kindle e-readers. Many book publishers continue to derive revenue through sales at Amazon.com. But the company is considered by publishers as a major competitor.

The Future of Amazon

Outsourcing means something completely different to Amazon than it does to other companies. Amazon Flex, a delivery service, will use everyday people to deliver products across the nation. Employees receive $18-25 an hour and create a work schedule which works for them. By having contractors and not full-time employees, Amazon will cut costs whilst offering a career to people looking for flexible work.

Amazon embraces all kinds of technological changes and doesn’t fear them. Netflix created the digital delivery of media which has destroyed companies like Blockbuster. Amazon brought out Amazon Prime Video to offer extensive resources and disrupt the Netflix market. The future of Amazon is to create more products like this. There’ll be more systems such as Alexa, Apple’s Siri and more to change the technology world. Amazon recently purchased Whole Foods and created Amazon Lockers for people to collect their online orders in-store. We’ll be seeing them making an appearance in more online and offline distributors.

Amazon’s Statistics and Facts

The international e-commerce company has grown immensely since it’s early days. The leading retailer made $178 billion net sales in 2017. The majority of Amazon’s revenues come through e-retail sales of electronics, followed by it's subscription services and AWS activities. As of 2016, the e-retailed reported more than 310 million customer accounts worldwide. Due to their expansion, more than 300,000 employees work for Amazon, with 40,000 alone living in Seattle.

Amazon is the default buying site for just about anything and everything, especially for those who have Amazon Prime. In 2016, 43 percent of all US online retail sales were through Amazon. In 2013 alone, the company shipped 608 million packages that year, or 1.6 million packages a day. There's no doubt that Amazon has become a giant in the retail market!

Coins are an excellent investment for anyone. The age of a coin can significantly affect its worth. Ancient coins from earlier historical eras are more valuable than coins today. This is partly due to the metal used, as well as its historical meaning. It’ll be more valuable if it’s rare to obtain. There are a number of old Roman coins made of common metals found in the United Kingdom. Even modern coins can be quite valuable if they’re rare, or coins which are no longer in operation.

The metal amount and its purity dictates how much a coin is worth too. U.S. pennies produced before 1983 are mainly made from copper, whilst newer pennies are composed of zinc, which are less valuable. If gold and silver increases in price, you can sell the coins later at a premium price. They'll sell for more than the worth of the coin.
