Enjoying fine spirits can be a great way to relax or fellowship with friends.
And if you enjoy sipping on pricey tequila, you probably already know how varied the segment is. There are many different flavors and levels of refinement to the most expensive tequila. But a handful of brands really stand out -- largely based on their price tags.
There are several factors determining the cost of the bottles listed below. Some are produced in extremely small batches. Others are accompanied by costly materials and other opulent accessories.
But there is a common thread running through each of the most expensive tequila labels. Fans continue to shell out big bucks to enjoy the luxurious elixir bottled inside. Keep reading for the low down on what makes each of these brands so special.
The Most Expensive Tequila Brands Offer More Than Alcohol Content
Maybe when we were in college, drinking was about getting drunk and raucously partying. As we get older and (hopefully) wiser, enjoying the finer things takes on a new significance. And among those of us who appreciate premium spirits, the fun doesn't come in binging.
Indulging in these exquisite brands is great. But overindulgence is really unnecessary. Instead, sipping and enjoying the nuanced tastes of the most expensive tequila can be its own reward. Each of us has our own motivation for purchasing any of the bottles below. And we'll let you know what each has to offer so you can pick the one that speaks to you. No matter which you choose, we think you'll be able to easily tell why it carries a higher price than a typical tequila.
1. Ley Diamante
We'll start with the absolute most expensive tequila bottle you can purchase today. And we'll emphasize the bottle itself, since that's where most of the value can be found.
Of course, the Ley .925 premium extra anejo tequila is some of the best in the world. But you could purchase similarly refined and smooth spirits for a small fraction of the price. So what makes this one worth millions of dollars? A lot of it has to do with the platinum vessel and precious gems with which it is adorned.
You can find one of the world's most expensive metals surrounding your precious tequila. It's made of more than four pounds of platinum, but the opulence is just getting started. You will also find 4,100 individual diamonds on the exterior of this pricey bottle. That might seem like overkill. But if you must have the grandest and most expensive tequila bottle around, look no further.
Don't think you're just paying for the metals and rocks, though. Inside, you'll find premium tequila aged in barrels for seven years. It is made of the finest agave and creates a complex and enjoyable flavor to savor.
2. AsomBroso Reserva Del Porto
Compared to our first entry, a few thousand dollars might seem like a bargain. But it still ranks AsomBroso Reserva Del Porto among the most expensive tequila labels. It might not have a diamonds and platinum, but you can tell from first glance that it's no ordinary bottle.
You'll find this extremely limited batch of tequila in beautiful crystal bottles. And each one is both signed an numbered. That way you'll know exactly where your purchase falls in the limited edition run. Each bottle is also hand crafted in Italy from some of the finest materials. And a crystal stopper on top finishes the package in elegance.
As for the spirits inside, this crisp and full flavored tequila is aged for five years in French barrels. The Port wine barrels provide a high sugar content for a tremendously easy drinking tequila. Tequila master Ricardo Gamarra created the blend after significant testing and refinement.
And the crystal decanter he found to bottle the first example is perfectly recreated for those on sale now. Plus, it all comes housed in a handmade cedar humidor for an opulent presentation.
3. Barrique de Ponciano Porfidio
For about a couple grand, you can pick up the third bottle on our list of most expensive tequila. This one comes in a beautiful bottle embossed with 21-karat gold. But the real joy is the nectar poured inside.
This is a tequila made completely from blue agave. The distillation process is laborious and precise, leading to a finished product sure to please. It's an 80 proof product that has been aged for 10 years.
The barrels used in this distillery are made of the finest woods including cherry, acacia and esche. For the most expensive tequila available from this brand, though, the barrels are especially fine. They are made of French Limousin oak, giving the final product a fully developed body and taste.
All that might sound like enough to drive the price up. But exclusivity is another big factor. Only 2,000 bottles are produced on any given year. So you might have to pay more than the asking price if stock gets too low.
4. 1800 Coleccion Reserva
Here's another exceptionally limited supply. And the price reflects the exclusivity. You'll find examples of this tequila only in the absolute best years. If the production isn't up to the high standards, you'll just have to wait.
But waiting is worth the effort for those who love its unparalleled taste. The limited edition nature extends to the decanter, too. Each one is custom designed by a talented artist.
As a complete package, this is far more than just a bottle of tequila. It is a work of art and a conversation piece unlike most others. Maybe you're already familiar with the 1800 brand and its corporate cousin, Jose Cuervo. Both are owned by the Beckmann family and have built a reputation as some of the best tequila in the world. But if you haven't tried this 1800 Coleccion label, you're missing something special.
The name comes from the first year on record for aging tequila in oak barrels. Since then, this spirit has come a long way. And near the pinnacle of tequila production sits this esteemed brand. Pick up a Belgian crystal bottle full of this product for an example you'll be anxious to show off.
5. Clase Azul Extra Anejo
Want something even harder to find? Check out this unique brand -- but you'd better act fast! There were only 50 bottles of Clase Azul Ultra produced for the United States market. And another 50 were put up for sale in Mexico.
For something that exclusive, you'll have to pay a significant premium. But with a typical price under $2,000, it's not as costly as some of its top tier competitors. Plus, it is bottled in a brilliant ceramic decanter accented by platinum, gold and silver paints.
And count on its elegant appearance to add some incredible class to any liquor collection. Of course, you might not want to just let it sit on a shelf. That might be especially true after you take your first sip.
We think it stands out for more than just being one of the most expensive tequila brands available. The distillation process starts with the finest Tequilliana Weber blue agave. From there, it is sent to age for years in some of the most aromatic Sherry oak barrels in the world. A word like 'premium' hardly does this spirit justice. If you're in the market for the top of the line tequila, we think this makes a really solid choice.
6. Rey Sol Anejo
If you speak a little Spanish, you'll understand this sunny presentation. Rey Sol Anejo comes in a delightfully frivolous package. Find an unmatched tequila inside an unmistakable bottle shaped to resemble the sun.
For a few hundred dollars, you can add this unique bottle to your collection. And with it, you'll have the story of more than 130 years of tequila production.
It all started in 1886 when master distiller Don Delfino Gonzalez produced his first batch. Since then, the process has become more refined and this product continued to collect fans. Today, it's one of the most expensive tequila brands on the market.
Take a sniff and your first sip and you'll immediately recognize it's far more than just a cute bottle. The flavors are robust and complex, aided by the aging process in French oak barrels. Find hints of sweetness, including notes of caramel and vanilla. Offsetting those flavors is a bit of spice. Aging takes at least five years to complete, and it pays off. You don't want to rush perfection, and that's a lesson Rey Sol has never forgotten.
7. Casa Herradura Seleccion Suprema
Casa Herradura Seleccion Suprema doesn't have quite the pedigree of some other tequilas. But since coming onto the scene in 1990, it has made a name for itself among discerning spirits collectors.
A unique process starts with the best agave plants available. From there, roasters cook the plant in a brick oven for a complete day. Then the resulting mixture is allowed to age for more than four years.
The process and presentation might seem like enough to justify its three digit price. But it's also been highly awarded for quality and consistency over the years. In 2014, for example, it won three prestigious awards.
It took home the gold medal from the Los Angeles International Spirits competition that year. The brand also won gold at the Spirits International Prestige Awards and the International Spirits Challenge.
8. Don Julio Real
You might recognize this revered name in the tequila world. Named after Don Julio Gonzalez, these spirits are built on a long history of expert production.
If you pick any variety from this brand, you'll find a dedication to quality and expert distillation. But we're talking about the most expensive tequila. And there's only one Don Julio label that qualifies.
It's called Real and it might be different than any other tequila you've ever tried. This batch is aged for as long as five years in American white oak barrels. When the experts determine it's ready to consume, it's bottled and shipped for your enjoyment.
Take a sip and enjoy the subtle sweet hints of chocolate, vanilla and other notes. This is a top shelf tequila to rival any others. And it fits in well on the shelf of any true fan. For collecting, entertaining or just enjoying on your own, it's hard to go wrong with this esteemed label.
If you're not familiar with the most expensive tequila, you might not fully understand the appeal.
But we hope our review of some of the costliest spirits has helped break down the premium costs. Whether you want the absolute best taste, an opulent presentation or both, the choice is yours.
