The New Vision Mercedes Maybach 6 Concept Car Revealed

What better place for the Daimler AG, Mercedes-Maybach’s parent company, to showcase its new king-sized Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept car than at Monterey Car Week, the red carpet driveway of the starlets of the world’s car industry.

The unveiling that took place on Thursday night reared up the crowd to oohs and ahhs of pleasant surprise, while the cameras raced to get the best shots of the 18-and-a-half-foot-long Goliath coupe.

The New Vision Mercedes Maybach 6 – A Modern Vision of the Old Aero Coupes

In case you’re not proficient in Mercedes parlance, Vision stands for concept car, while the 6 translates to length in meters.

The instant appeal of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 came from the aesthetic dimensions of the car – the elongated hood, the low rooftop, and the ‘boat tail’ sloping rear of the body that is meant to conjure the flash image of a luxury yacht.

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 indulges in a series of historical automotive design references. The statement of this ultra-luxury car is not to be a retro throwback, but a reinterpretation of classic principles.

It doesn’t copy-paste history, as Mercedes declared, it gives it a modern spin.

The concept car recalls the aero coupés of yesteryear, the designer cars of the 1940s that incorporated aircraft features: long noses, sharply sloping rear ends, and bulging fenders.

While the Mercedes-Maybach 6 takes a step back in history with a retro split rear window, gull-wing doors that hinge at the top, opening out and up, and a strutted front radiator grill that the company said was inspired by a pinstripe suit, the electric drivetrain, and the high-tech cabin are at the forefront of car technology.

The car packs an 80-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery in its floor, allowing for a range of over 500 kilometers (200 miles) from its 738 electric horsepower. That means it would accelerate up to 60 miles per hour in under 4 seconds. We way ‘would’, because for now the feature exists only on the company’s wish list as a design exercise.

The Future-to-be Electric Car

The concept car aims to offer the ultimate in luxury, an ambitious goal that wouldn’t come about without the autopilot autonomous mode.

“Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool”, said Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG.

The cool, technoid look shapes not only the outside but the inside of the car as well.

The interior is minimalistic in design, to say the least. The traditional high-quality leather upholstery and wood trim on the doors and dashboard combine with a digital world of displays: seat climate features, massage functions, and “body sensor displays” that scan and monitor the occupants’ vital functions.

The side sills, illuminated by LED light strips, are at the apex of the concept car’s innovative design. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is meant to be an electric car.

It includes DC fast-charging capability based on the CCS standard, which allows for a charging capacity of up to 350 kW. In five minutes it can store enough power to increase its range to another 62 miles.

While the New Vision Mercedes Maybach 6 might be just a visionary show car and not expected to make it to the production line soon, we can only hope some of its features will become a trademark of the industry. Mercedes already announced its plans for a series of new electric vehicles.
