Background About Nikon

Nikon was formed on July 25, 1917. It began with 200 employees and eight German technicians who actually started the company as an optical firm before transforming it to a camera manufacturer. 10 years’ later, and the company produced a series of photographic lenses from 50mm to 700mm. Mostly, these were for plate-back cameras and the word ‘Nikkor’ was first introduced on early microscopes. By August 1937, the company had completed the design of 50mm f4.5, 3.5 and 2.0 Nikkors which came as original equipment the same year.

By the end of the Second World War, Nikon were reorganized under the occupation for civilian production only and were reduced to just one factory with around 1400 employees. Immediately, they started producing fine optical products from before the war, which were mainly used in Japan. At this point, they were still unknown to the rest of the world.

The first official camera was marketed in March 1948. This basic design combined features from Leica and Contax cameras of the day, although over the years, many people assumed it was simply a replica. However, it soon received positive feedback from critics. The arrival of the Nikon S in 1951 was the first camera which led to the rest of the world discovering the Nikon company. Built over the course of four years, this camera was the first commercial success of the brand.
