The Eiffel Tower is the first monument people think of when they hear Paris. Located at Champ de Mars opposite the Trocadero, it’s across from the River Seine. It was constructed in 1887 and 1889 to celebrate the French Revolution.

In March 1889, the Tower was inaugurated when architect Eiffel walked up the total 1,710 steps to place the French flag at the top. People love to see the Tower because it was once the tallest building in the world, and remained so for 40 years.

Every year over seven million tourists visit it each year. There are three totals, each comprising of 300 steps. From the top, you’ll see Paris’s magnificent views. Or, see a waxwork of architect Eiffel with his daughter and guest, the American inventor Thomas Edison.

2. Notre Dame Cathedral

Notre Dame Cathedral is located right in the centre of Paris. Just in the front doors of the Cathedral is the “mile marker”. From here, you can see the Eiffel Tower, Sacre-Coeur, rooftops of ancient Paris homes, and more. It is the most popular tourist attraction – even more so than the Tower.

The Cathedral is known for its representation of French Goth architecture, which prevailed around the late medieval period. The construction first began in 1163 and was completed 182 years later. This lengthy time was due to the dedication to the bishops and architectures. The Cathedral has been restored several times since being built, but continues to be popular amongst tourists worldwide.

The Cathedral holds one of the world’s largest organs and is infamous for its gigantic church bells.  Listen out for a wonderful sound.

It’s free for anyone to enter, but you can pay for an audio guide. This gives you a 35-minute overview and history of the Cathedral’s architecture. During the summer, they offer free tours.
