A Bit About Window Tint

Maybe your windows are already tinted. Or, perhaps you're thinking of having your windows tinted. Either way, there are some important things to know. Let's discuss what window tint is, its advantages, and the levels.

What is a Window Tint?

Window tinting is a film added to windows in homes, offices, and mainly cars to prevent the sun reflecting in. By darkening the look of the windows, it also enhances privacy, whilst still offering you to clearly look outside. Some vehicle companies have windows which come with a natural tint, though there is generally only featured on the rear windows. A Window tint happens when you dye the glass, although you can purchase a tinted film to apply to the desired areas.

To update your car, a window tint is generally achieved with DIY kits. However, the results aren’t always the best when compared to professionals. When considering a window tint, there are two options to think about. First of all, OEM tinted glass has a tiny mixture added into the glass itself. This is the most-costly method which a dealership needs to do. Alternatively, film tint is the most popular option. Simply treat the glass before applying a polymer film over the area. However, this is prone to bubbles and cracks, and you need to change the film every few years to prevent peeling.

What Does Window Tint Do?

Car window tints aim to provide heat during the winter, and heat radiates through the films to prevent it from escaping. This gives the benefits of a warmer and more comfortable temperature inside the car. The absorption function of the tints come in a percentage of sunlight absorbed and prevented to be transmitted inside the vehicle. As a result, it reduces the glare from other vehicles and the visible light. Because the tint blocks the sunrays, it cools the interior of the car, to make it more comfortable and bearable for passengers during the summer months.

A window tint is an application of film applied to the window’s surface. It’s not installed on the outer-surface of the glass, but on the inside to prevent external wear-and-tear, and excessive weather conditions. Essentially, it’s a shade of polyester laminate treated in many ways to improve the look and performance of existing windows. This layer makes up a bulk of the tint film mixed with metals and dyes for a desired appearance. You then apply another layer of film – made from various tinting agents. This stage varies depending on what kind of tint you're aiming for. This second layer helps to block harmful sun rays which can fade the car’s interior and colour in general. It’s also this layer which blocks the UV rays.

Why Is Window Tint Beneficial?

Window tinting has many benefits. Many people tint their car windows because it’s great for kids in the backseats. The tinting material reduces the heat which enters the car by up to 50 percent. This puts less strain on air conditioning units and enables the vehicle to rapidly cool more, despite the outside temperature.

Many companies have films which filter out 99 percent of UV rays. As you may already know, UV rays can cause skin aging and skin cancer. Therefore, by blocking out these harmful rays, you put your skin in less danger. With a mixture of UV rays and solar heat building up on the interior of your car, this can fade plastics and cause cracks on your interior. However, a window tint helps to keep your car looking younger for longer.

If you have children in the back of your car, you’re probably worried about their safety whilst driving. However, a window tint adds extra protection: if a window is tampered, it’ll shatter. But, with a window film holding the glass in place, this protects passengers from injury. Whilst we’re on the subject of safety, a window tint discourages car thieves. Passersby can’t see what’s inside your car, and it’s more difficult to break into your car with a tinted film holding the windows in place.

A window tint also keeps the sun out of your eyes whilst you’re driving, or in the passenger seat. This helps to reduce sun glare affecting your vision and bouncing off of electrical devices. As people can’t clearly see into your vehicle, office or home, it adds value to your privacy. Consequently, you don’t have to fear that people can see what you’re up to. This peace of mind is highly beneficial.

What Are the Window Tinting Percentages?

There are different levels to a window tint, which are measured in visible light transmission levels. Displayed as a percentage of the amount of light which can enter through the vehicles, there's a variety of choices. For example, if someone said, “you can have 40 percent on the back windows”, this means 40 percent of the visible light will pass through the film. In order to calculate this measure on your window, you multiply the visible light transmission levels of the tint applied by the visible light transmission levels of the glass.

50 percent shade blocks 50 percent of the available light from the interior of the car. This is a suitable option for blocking heat and ultraviolet radiation. On the other hand, 35 percent shade is the maximum allowed by Michigan and Indiana law. But, one of the most popular options is 20 percent, which is also referred to as ‘Factory Tint’. Allowing 20 percent of light to pass through the film achieves a dark look. In many cases, you can just about see silhouettes through the film. As a result, it’s great for privacy or to reduce light reflecting on TV consoles and in passengers’ eyes. For ultimate privacy, a five-percent tint is the darkest shade and considerably reduces visibility. Commercial vehicles, such as limousines, use this option.
