Invest in a Lalique Vase for an Exquisite Home Decoration

René Lalique (1860–1945), a famous French jewelry and glassware designer, is recognized as one of the finest Art Deco and Art Noveau creators of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Before we get to know more about the iconic Lalique vase and bowl products, let’s find out a bit more about who Lalique was.

Getting to know the maker

René Lalique had a magician’s touch when it came to glass designing. He soon became famous for his glass art, including vases, perfume bottles, jewelry, clocks, chandeliers, and even automobile hood ornaments.

Lalique was rather young when he started showing interest in the various methods of designing and creating art. His early lessons built a solid foundation for the career he would end up choosing.

His first “job” in the field was as an apprentice to goldsmith Louis Aucoc in Paris. After his master died, he enrolled in the Collège Turgot. This marks the moment when Lalique started drawing and sketching more, trying his hand with various styles.

Lalique also went to the Sydenham Art College, where he learned to further improve his skills for graphic design. At this time, he began showing particular interest in a naturalistic approach to his art.

Success and fame

There is something about the Lalique glassware – its stylistic and technological innovation – that attracts many fans and buyers still. His fame started during his lifetime, as an architectural and glass products designer alike.

Lalique’s creations in glass art were varied, matching the styles he was trying his hand at. Notably, his work in the Art Deco style in the 1920s was the first to make him famous. More people starting hearing about him, especially through his architectural works. The interior design of the dining room and “grand salon” of the SS Normandie bear his signature. The elegant colored glass columns and the walls of lighted glass are a sight to behold.

Lalique’s “Glass Church” – a fitting nickname for St. Matthew’s Church at Millbrook, Jersey – can still be visited today. Visitors are in awe of the magnificent screens, interior fittings, cross, and reredos.

Influences

Even though his family moved to Paris when he was young, he used to go back to Ay (southwestern France) during his summer holidays. His earlier experiences in this town had a great influence on his later glass work. Consequently, many of his jewelry pieces and vases feature various flowers, plants. Flowing lines seem to be a constant in Lalique’s art.

Museum exhibits

Today, René Lalique is still remembered for his exquisite decorative glass, particularly vases and bowls. The Lalique Company – founded after his death – continues to create glass art and jewelry in Lalique’s style to this day.

If you want to see some of his original art, you can check out any of the many collections of public museums around the world that hold Lalique exhibits. Both his unique and commercial art can be seen at the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisbon), the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim (Germany), the Musée Lalique and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (France), the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), and at the Metropolitan Museum and the Corning Museum (New York).
