1. Chillingham Castle, Northumberland, England

Chillingham Castle is one of the most haunted places in England to visit. Built in the 13th century, this Castle is famous for its action and battles. With an array of luxury rooms, lakes, gardens and tea rooms, the Castle dates back to the 1200’s. Although this Castle is haunted, it’s nestled in a romantic and thriving destination. As a result, it’s an ideal spot for short breaks. But, if you’re looking for a ghostly experience, there are plenty of tours and guides to embark on.

Throughout the year, there’s a collection of trips and guides featuring high levels of paranormal activity in the country. Specifically, there’s a large collection of spectres spotted by visitors over the years, and the sightings are offer unique each time. Purchase a ticket for a ghost tour and you might be lucky enough to spot one during the day. However, if you’re brave enough, choose the night-time guided ghost tour to explore the most haunted places of the castle. 2. The Skirrid Mountain Inn, Crucorney, South Wales

Skirrid Mountain Inn is one of the oldest pubs in Wales, carrying a history and culture that makes it one of the most haunted places. In fact, William Shakespeare took inspiration from this site, and may have rallied his men on this very location. If you’re brave enough to stay a few nights here, there’s a high chance you’ll encounter a ghost, or maybe a few. For over 900 years, the Skirrid Mountain Inn has been one of the most haunted places in the world. This Inn carries a lot of evidence and research to suggest it was there during the Norman Conquest in the 11th Century.

Before transforming into an Inn, it was used during the past as both a courtroom and executive place with its own oak hanging beam. It’s said that the victims of the rope still appear, which makes it one of the most haunted places. Over the course of its time as an executive place, it saw more than 180 criminals hanged. Apparently, Owain Glyndŵr used it as a destination against Henry IV to rally his troops before raiding the settlements. Many wounded soldiers would return to this spot, with many seriously injured and wounded.

There are numerous rooms to stay in and explore at your time at the Skirrid Mountain Inn. Room 1’s bathroom used to be a prison cell and visitors have experienced many paranormal sightings here. For example, many even claim that they’ve received a cold snap to attempted murder. Visitors even proclaim that the doors open easy as a way to welcome you into the room. The landing isn’t for the light-hearted as it’s where victims used to spend their last minutes. Apparently, you’ll experience difficulty breathing as you head towards this room.

3. Dragsholm Castle, Zealand, Denmark

Dragsholm Castle is one of the oldest buildings in Denmark and also one of the most haunted places. The original Dragsholm Castle was built during the Middle Ages and modified from the original palace to a castle. It was so strong that it was the only castle to withstand the armies of Count Christoffer. Despite its age, to this today, the Castle remains intact. However, the interior is subject to modernization and restoration over recent years. The most recent restoration took place just after the First World War which still stands as salons and ballrooms. The owners continue to limit the restorations on this Castle whilst raising its quality as a hotel, restaurant and attraction destination. The rooms are modernized and there are more than ever added to the Castle.

Many of the ghosts at this Castle are as historic as the Castle itself. After the Protestant Reformation, the Castle was passed into a new King’s hands and used as a prison. The prisoner’s cells were built and designed to fit their crimes, actions and the nature of their behavior. Two of the owners were prisoners in Dragsholm Castle during this period.

Some visitors report seeing Bishop Ronnow’s Protestant captors where he died in 1544. Around 100 ghosts walk the grounds of this Castle. Visitors have reported hearing moaning in the tower and the sounds of Catholic chanting. One particular individual, James Hepburn, died in this Castle. He was captured in Norway and imprisoned at Dragsholm Castle. His captors gave him enough food and water to keep him alive, tied him to a pillar and then left him to die. After going mad, he died around 30 years later. Finally, some visitors heard horses’ hooves beating on the yard floor.

4. The Ancient Ram Inn, Gloucestershire, England

The Ancient Ram Inn was built in 1145 and Priests used it to house slaves and workers who constructed the St. Mary Church. After 1930, the Inn became a private property and changed hands several times. According to visitors, there are certain locations surrounding the Inn where people have experienced high spiritual energy, making it one of the most haunted places. Apparently, you can feel the energy through the Ley Lines to experience the paranormal power. 5,000 years prior, it’s reported that there was an ancient Pagan burial ground on the area.  

Allegedly, there are many ghosts residing at the Ancient Ram Inn. The witch burned at the stake, and this was the prosecution grounds where people believed Christianity was sanctioned by the government. Many people believe that the woman’s spirit continued to haunt the house in this present day. This room is called ‘The Witch’s Room’. A past owner discovered skeletal remains of children, as well as broken daggers. Many people still see the sightings of these victims running through the corridors at night.

The bishop’s Inn is one of the most haunted rooms in the entire Inn. Found on the first floor in the house was the Inn was still a bed and breakfast. Many of the guests who stayed in this area ended up fleeing in the middle of the night, because they saw ghosts on a regular basis. Finally, it’s said that a plumber spotted a ghost and was so startled he went straight through the wall. Visitors also claimed that their bed creeped at night.

5. ​Lizzie Borden House, Fall River, Massachusetts

Another of the most haunted places in the world is Lizzie Borden House in Massachusetts. From 1874 to 1892, the house was owned by Andrew Borden, Lizzie Borden’s father. Lizzie was an American women who gained a following as the main suspect for her father and stepmother’s murder. She was later acquitted for these murders. You can embark on a tour of the House every hour from 11am until 3pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

If you choose to stay in the Lizzie Borden House, you can stay in Lizzie’s bedroom. It has a full-size bed and can be combined with Emma’s (her sister) room as a suite to comfortably sleep up to four people. Guests have experienced all kinds of sightings and experiences in her bedroom, as well as other areas in the house. Alternatively, you can stay in Emma’s room which offers a queen size bed. She was only 12 years old when her mother died, and made a promise to her to always protect Lizzie. During her sister’s trial, Emma showed Lizzie nothing but support and testified as a star witness for the defence at the final trial in June 1893.

John’s body was found on the morning of August 4, 1892. The room is decorated to transport you back to that fateful morning. Also, you have the option to stay in Mr. and Mrs. Borden’s master bedroom which is decorated in rich, dark Victorian furniture. Furthermore, the bedroom has a private bath. Mr. Borden arrived home on August 4 and his body was discovered in the sitting room and reported by Lizzie at 11.10am. The autopsy revealed that he had received 10 blows to the face with a hatchet. You definitely won't want to miss out on one of the most haunted places!

6. The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Calgary, Alberta

Another of the most haunted places to visit is The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Located in the heart of Banff National Park, the hotel stands as a landmark in the picturesque alpine town of Banff, Alberta. It’s referred to as Canada’s ‘Castle in the Rockies’ and had provided hospitality to guests for over 100 years. The area is a year-round luxury mountain resort which offers outdoor activities – such as golf, skiing and more.

One of the most famous ghostly tales refers back to the late 1920’s. The story goes into detail about a young couple’s wedding day. The bride slipped in her wedding gown and fell down the hotel’s staircases. Although the exact cause of her fall is unknown, she died on those steps. Hotel staff and guests report seeing a veiled figure dancing in the ballroom upstairs and walking up and down the stairs. Another ghostly figure is Sam McCAuley – a head bellman. However, Sam isn’t a spirit to fear, as the stories and sighting indicate that he helps guests with his service. One incident refers to two elderly women waiting at the bell desk for assistance because their key wouldn’t work. By the time the regular bellman arrived to help, it was unlocked. Other stories talk about Sam’s description, as well as seeing him in his old office.

Staff at the Hotel mention that there are specific rooms which are haunted. However, they don’t specific the room numbers. One experience includes pillows yanked from under guests’ heads, or even being pushed off the bed for no reason. Although the spirits are unknown, they can’t rest and don’t want others to either. Finally, another room holds the spirits of an entire family who were murdered there. Guests report hearing screaming, and bloody hand prints on the mirror, ranking this as one of the most haunted places.

7. The Tower of London, London

The Tower of London is another of the most haunted places to visit if you enjoy encountering spiritual experiences. With over 900 years of existence, the Tower of London has earned a reputation of being one of the most haunted places in the UK. It’s said that Thomas A. Becket is one of the first ghosts seen in this tower. Apparently, Thomas was unhappy about the construction in the Inner Curtain Wall, and reduced the wall to rubble with a strike. Another of the most famous ghosts is Arbella Stuart. She married the nephew of Lady Jane Grey and she was put under house arrest while her husband was sent to the tower. She plotted to get William released so they could travel to France. It’s believed that she was murdered in the castle before ever making it to freedom.

The Bloody Tower is a place in the castle where you can experience grisly sightings. There’s a famous story of two young princes who were declared illegitimate and sent to the tower. Visitors have seen them playing around happily on the grounds but then suddenly vanish. History indicates that they were murdered by their uncle’s order. It’s believed that their bodies were unearthed beneath a staircase in the White Tower. People have reported hearing them throughout the Tower, as well as seeing them wear nightgowns whilst clutching each other in terror.

Lastly, one of the most famous ghosts residing here is Queen Anne Boleyn. Married to King Henry VIII, she was arrested and taken to Tower Green for a beheading. Visitors report seeing her close to the site where she was beheaded. Several people have even claimed to see her headless body walking the corridors.  

8. The Myrtles Plantation, St. Francisville, Louisiana

The Myrtles Plantation is surrounded by live oak trees and features a 125-foot verandah, hand-painted stained glass, gold-leafed French furnishings and more. When you first see the home, it looks peaceful and tranquillity, although many ghosts have been sighted here. You can experience a private tour or guided day tour, or embark on a complimentary self-guided tour. There are even mystery evening tours on Fridays and Saturdays. We recommend booking a reservation in advance so you don’t miss out. Why not even go all out by staying overnight in their choice of spacious accommodations?  

In 1992, someone photographed what looked like a slave girl standing between two buildings on the plantation. The insurance company required photographs to show the distance between the buildings for a fire insurance policy. But, The National Geographic Explorer filming crew determined that this photograph appeared to be a slave girl. A patent researchist visited The Myrtles Plantation and requested to see this photograph. After enlarging and analysing it, he discovered that the physical measurements were of human dimensions. It was an indication that the person in the photograph was a human.

Another sighting refers to a girl dressed in antebellum clothing who is peering out of a window and looking into the camera. In the photograph, her eyes, hair and clothes are clearly visible, although it’s unknown who she is and how she got there. Referred to as “The Ghost Girl”, it’s become famous across the globe. In fact, the photo has been technically investigated to see if the file size, aperture setting etc., impacted this appearance. However, nothing unusual was reported to indicate the camera effected the figure’s appearance. To this day, it’s difficult to explain why the figure of a girl appears in the photograph.

9. Driskill Hotel, Austin, Texas

Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas, is another of the most haunted places to visit in the United States. Opening in 20 December, 1886, the Hotel was constructed just a year earlier for less than $8,000. When it was completed, it resulted in over $400,000 in expenses. It’s rumoured that Room 525 is the most haunted room in the entire Hotel. A story refers to the “suicide brides”. These two women were on their honeymoon in the hotel 20 years apart and took their own lives in the bathroom. The staff blocked off the bathroom area and shut down the room completely. By 1998, the room re-opened. But, many visitors have confirmed to see several strange sightings including sensations of apparitions.

Furthermore, it’s rumoured that another lady committed suicide on the fourth floor of this Hotel. Many visitors claim to have seen a female’s spirit out of the corner of their eye on the floor. But, when they look, there’s no one there. There have even been reports of a female whispering on the floor. People have even reported hearing a woman’s cry on the fourth floor, even when no one is staying on that floor. Also, there’s a documented story in which a young girl met her fate while chasing a ball along the staircase in the hotel. A week after her death, it was reported that she was playing in the hotel with her ball.

This particular story was the first paranormal experience at the Driskill Hotel. With an array of stories and sightings at this Hotel, there are plenty of things to experience here. Even though there aren’t any tour guides or activities based on these paranormal activities, you’ll likely experience them during your stay.

10. Edinburgh Castle, Scotland

Edinburgh Castle is another of the most haunted places to visit. Over the years, there have been numerous paranormal activities reported in this area. It’s said that former prisoners haunt the ground. It’s said that Oliver Cromwell attacked the castle in 1650 and is one of the spirits spotted. Mainly, people have heard the sound of drums coming from the battlements, although not a physical appearance. Standing between the sea and hills, the Castle is more than 900 years old. The cells of its ancient dungeon could be the eternal place for numerous spirits. Specifically, victims of the Black Death plague were sealed up to die nearby.

Amongst some suspicious activity reported, people experienced sudden drops in temperature. Also, they saw shadowy figures and a feeling of being watched. Many guests even reported seeing an unseen presence touching their face, whilst one person reported a burning sensation on their arm. Also, one particular visitor reported seeing a spectre in a leather apron. This ghost has been seen before in the same location. It’s easy for studies and research to influential your thinking, but when a group of volunteers visited this space, they had no knowledge of spiritual experiences. However, they experienced sudden temperature reductions or increases, plus air movements. These unexplained sensations were put down as paranormal activities.
