Rebecca Minkoff is an industry leader in luxury, yet accessible, accessories, handbags, apparel, and footwear. Her collections are widely popular among young women and celebrities alike, as her playful and subtly edgy designs attract a wide variety of people with different style preferences and fashion tastes. Born in San Diego, CA, Rebecca discovered her passion for design and fashion at an early age. She started sewing her own clothing and her obvious talent led her to participate in the costume department in high school.
Due to her affinity for everything fashionable, 18-year old Rebecca Minkoff decided to move to New York City to pursue her dreams of becoming a famous fashion designer. She caught her break in 2001, when she designed a version of the “I Love New York” T-shirt that went viral overnight. The sensation was part of a five-piece capsule collection, which was featured on The Tonight Show.
Thousands of requests for the patriotic tee flooded in in the months to come. Therefore, Rebecca spent the next few years of her designer career sewing “I Love New York” shirts on the floor of her New York condo. But in 2005, Rebecca decided things were about to change. She took a stab at handbags, which resulted in the first handbag she ever designed, the “Morning After Bag,” a.k.a. the “M.A.B.”
It was this iconic bag that helped ignite Rebecca’s career as a handbag designer. It also inspired her entire collection of “downtown romantic” designs she continued to produce in the following years. Thanks to the immense support of her brother the company’s CEO and co-founder, Uri Minkoff, Rebecca soon saw new heights of success.
The next 4 years saw Rebecca Minkoff designing statement accessories and handbags with her trademark studs, leather, and edgy hardware. After that, Rebecca returned to her apparel design roots and launched her very first ready-to-wear collection in 2009.

Rebecca Minkoff Tips
For anyone who first hears about Minkoff’s impressive and successful career, the first logical question is: How did she get where she is today? Which is to say, how could she start a multi-million dollar bag and clothing line from nothing? In this 2011 interview, Rebecca gives aspiring designers some tips to keep in mind as they pursue success:
- Be willing to do anything in order to start. It’s not easy to make a name for yourself in the fashion industry, which is why you have to start low. If you can get an internship, do it. Do anything that helps you get your foot in the door. Be a go-getter and don’t be afraid to be vocal. Don’t be bigger or more important than your job. That’s Rebecca’s recipe for breaking into the fashion industry.
- You need good credit to start a company. To quote Rebecca, “Every dollar I made went back in. I started with $10,000 from saving up my whole life. By the time I began to grow at a rate that was beyond dollar in, dollar out, I was in business with my brother. Luckily he had great credit and could secure a credit line.” Rebecca Minkoff saved up for a long time before she could come up with the first $10,000 to start her company. If you’re able to secure a good credit line, then you’ll be lucky enough to own 100% of the company, with no investors to pay back.
- Preserve your style, but give buyers what they want. According to Minkoff, a lot of modern customers are looking for newness, innovation, newness and color. Which is surprising, given that black is retail’s bestseller. However, she strongly believes that when buyers shop in the luxury line, they look for happy and color. So that’s what she gives them every time!
