Things To Consider Before Buying This Chromebook

How do you know if a Chromebook is right for you? As with any technological gadget, it has its purpose -- which might not always be suitable for everyone. Chromebooks rely on Google’s apps, using services such as Google Drive, Gmail, and the Chrome browser to remain as productive as possible.

For this reason, many Apple users find it difficult to make the switch to the Acer R11 Chromebook, and Google in general. Apple apps aren’t available on Chromebooks. Consequently, it’s not easy to sync up your MacBook Air to your new device. If you fall into this camp, consider the learning curve and compatibility issues that may ensue.

It’s also worth considering if you use the features in the Microsoft Office suite. If so, a Chromebook will be an easy and productive transition. However, important document files can sometimes be confusing, so it’s an ideal device, unless you’re just using it for simple tasks.

Chromebooks heavily rely on apps to store files, so many believe that a low Internet connection won’t make a difference. However, a solid Internet connection is crucial for the downloading and syncing process. If you’re planning to use yours with limited Wi-Fi, you might get frustrated with how this affects the speeds.

  • The 360-degrees screen is impressive and handy. It’s also a great feature to adapt in watching videos to reading text on the screen.
  • The Plane Switching technology enables you to display images, text and videos at wide angles without it affecting the picture quality.
  • There are different modes to adjust to your reason for using it. The two hinges on the screen’s bottom edge provide a solid stance so it always feels secure no matter what mode it’s in.

The Many Features and Benefits of The Acer Model

Let’s take a look at six of our favourite features of the Acer R11 Chromebook. We’ve created categories we felt were the most important aspects of a Chromebook and how the Acer model manages to achieve such a well-respected reputation.

1. Extensive Battery Life

The Acer R11 Chromebook lasts nine and a half hours without charge, if you use it economically (ie. lowering the brightness). Depending on how many Internet tabs open in the browser, users reported the 3220 MAH battery lasted through at least eight hours of constant use. We recommend using 75 percent brightness or lower for the optimum battery life.

The Acer R11 Chromebook’s fanless designs means you can access multiple applications at the same time. The charger is almost identical to the Chromebook 14 and comes in a standard two-cable design. Consequently, if you’re heading out with your Chromebook, aim to charge it before you head out as the charger isn’t very practical.

2. Extremely Convertible For All Purposes

One of the best features of the Acer Rr11 Chromebook is how the tablet can flip, fold and pop up easily to adjust to your needs. Whether you’re working with it on your knee, desk, or standing up with it, making the change to suit your environment is easy. When you enter any of these modes, the screen automatically adjusts to suit, without you having to do anything. This also means that you receive a full-screen experience with every window, no matter the angle or size. Switching between the different positions is quick and easy. It’s also great to suit all different purposes of owning this Chromebook.

3. Excellent Ergonomics and Practical Design

The Acer R11 Chromebook delivers an excellent design for a reasonable base price. The 11.6-inch screen size is tidy, clean and suitable for most purposes. Whilst it’s designed with easy transportation in mind, the Chromebook is comfortable to hold and see everything you need on the screen without any pixilation issues. The diamond-patterned finish on the outside is pleasant to look at. This also offers excellent ergonomics for handling and at only 2.7 pounds, it doesn’t put any uncomfortable pressure on your wrist when you hold it. The Chromebook flips well and easily, and can switch to four different modes of your choice. Adapt the Chromebook to your needs, rather than the other way around.

4. Colourful Display

The 1366 x 768 touch-screen display is colourful and brings images, videos, and text to life. Landscapes are sharp, and the primary colours really pop out of the screen and appear three-dimensional. The display covers over 70 percent of the screen which beats the previous Chromebook Flip model. We recommend watching videos close in front of the Chromebook, as viewing angles at around 45 degrees become impaired. As a result, the colours look washed out and the screen seems to dim.

5. Excellent Audio For Meetings

Though the Acer R11 Chromebook wasn’t designed for music use, the quality averages at the same as a laptop. You can easily control the volume to fill a conference room, without using an additional speaker. It’s an excellent Chromebook to use during meetings to play videos everyone can hear, without any hassle. Many users even reported that people could hear the audio when sitting outside of the room. As the speakers are on the bottom of the Chromebook, the audio can become muffled if it’s on your laptop or propped onto something else. Avoid folding it onto a tablet position to make the most of the audio quality.

6. The Touch Experience

Sometimes, Chromebooks and tablets aren’t responsive, which is irritating as that’s the main reason you choose one rather than a laptop. The Acer R11 Chromebook has a reliable touch-screen experience. With a gentle tap of your finger, you can zoom in and out easily, and use two fingers to move back to a previous page promptly. When switching display modes, the on-screen keyboard adjusts accordingly for easy navigation. When using the Chromebook in the laptop mode, the on-screen keyboard is similar to the Windows programme. In this mode, the maximize button disappears which makes it a little more difficult to enlarge pictures and text. However, you don’t have to poke at the screen to navigate between apps.

We’ve scoured the Internet to find what other users thought of this Chromebook, and the overall reviews are positive. Many commented on how light it is to carry around and hold. They also loved the colourful display and comfortable keyboard to use on a daily basis all day. As such, many customers use it as a break from a laptop.

The responsive touch-screen and high performance makes the Chromebook easy to work with. However, the cursor is sometimes over-sensitive, making it a little difficult for finicky tasks such as drawing.

When navigating through different browsers, the response can sometimes be slower than competitor brands. Consequently, we recommend limiting the number of Internet browsers you use at one time. This will also help with the battery life and not overwhelm the performance.

PROS:

  • plus
The touchscreen controls are quick and easy to use
  • plus
Excellent price for the performance you receive
  • plus
    Comfortable keyboard and design

CONS:

  • close
Not recommended for people who perform several tasks at the same time
  • The design is slightly thicker than you’d expect

Alternative Chromebooks To Consider

We appreciate that the Acer R11 Chromebook isn’t for everyone – depending on what your main purpose for using it is. The thickness and incapability to handle several tasks at the same time can be disappointing for designs or multi-tasks. Don’t worry though, because we’ve researched three alternative Chromebooks to suit which are in another league. Let’s take a look at why they differ from the Acer option, and who they’re aimed at.

1. Google Pixelbook

The Google Pixelbook measures 10.3mm and comes in an aluminium and white plastic design. When you open up the Pixelbook, you’ll notice a 12-inch display with a high resolution of 2,400 x 1,600 pixels. This is great for people who spend a lot of time scrolling through applications and the Internet. This differs from the Acer R11 Chromebook as the pixel density is sharper and slightly more responsive.

When you grip the Pixelbook, it feels (and looks!) a lot more expensive than it is. The quality is solid, whilst remaining light-weight enough to carry around with you. The trackpad is stunning to look at whilst maintaining a focus to ergonomics. Similarly, the keyboard is practical and visually interesting to look at, which is an excellent feature for typists. The backlight enables you to see the keys at all times, a look that is appealing and visually stunning.

You can use the Pixelbook for many things, but it’s not an ideal choice to run After Effects and Adobe Photoshop at the same time. However, you can use multiple Android apps at the same time, whilst downloading software in the background. You can seamlessly integrate OneDrive, Dropbox and other storage software to access work on the go.

2. HP Chromebook 13

This is infamous for being one of the best performing Chromebooks on the market. The main difference between the Acer R11 Chromebook and this HP edition is the HD screen. This is one of the highlights of HP’s version, and we recommend this ultra-HD screen for designers and anyone looking to use a Chromebook to watch movies or videos.

The contrast of vibrant colours represents high-quality pictures and videos expertly. The glossy finish on the exterior of the Chromebook seems to somehow enhance pictures further. Additionally, we’re a huge fan of the track-pad and how easy it is to use without the need to click too hard. This is particularly important for fiddly tasks where you rely on the cursor to enhance your work.

From looking at the HP Chromebook, it easily stands out from competitor brands and is well suited to anyone who likes to purchase a gadget based off of its appearance and style. The attention to details and chrome HP logo are our favourite features of this model. The silver exterior is perfectly in line and well-matched throughout the entirety of this model. Its sharp corners give it a futuristic feel, although it’s not particularly important to those who require a gadget to complete work.

3. Lenovo 500e Chromebook

The Lenovo 500e Chromebook is an ideal alternative for those who are clumsy or on the go. It’s extremely versatile and strong enough to take a beating from every day use. As a result, it’s a great choice if you’re looking for a sturdy Chromebook to keep up with your hectic life. The brains of Lenovo are the processor, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It’s a reliable combination for anyone planning on spending a lot of time using their device.

One of the best features of Lenovo is how much data is can download at the same time, without any problems. You can stream music whilst browsing the Internet and not encounter any buffering issues. This is incredibly beneficial to productivity and those who have little patience for slow download speeds.

It’s more complex than the Acer R11 Chromebook, so it’s only an ideal alternative for gadget lovers or those who like using apps to store documents and pictures. We recommend purchasing the stylus to upgrade, though this will up the price, so the

choice is yours. We like that this hasn’t changed everything a Chromebook is about – as they’re an excellent addition to laptops. You can easily adapt your lifestyle to it, though it’s not for everyone.

Why Buy The Acer R11 Chromebook?

After we’ve shown you a few options, you might be wondering why you should purchase the Acer R11 Chromebook in particular. The six points above share its best features. However, let’s not forget that the Acer model presents itself with a vibrant touchscreen which is easy to use, as well as a super-flexible hinge for a practical operation.
