A Brief History of Women’s Shoes

During the 17th and 18th centuries, heels were first added to shoes to add height. By doing so, this meant that heels took on a great elevation compared to shoes previously. Heels were around two to three inches, although women’s skirts often covered their shoes. During these centuries, the height and style of your heel expressed your status. For example, red heels were typically worn to court, and a law existed in France to represent the power and status of the aristocratic elite across Europe.

In Italy, the heels were tall and spiked with a mid-height and in a curvaceous style. On the other hand, the English heel was thicker and a lot lower. European women were more likely to wear heels in court than at home. A thicker heel was necessary for natural terrains in England so women could still walk in their shoes on uneven surfaces. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, Italy and France began producing new materials and fabrics to begin focusing more on style and not just functionality. As a result, the industry increased its cost development.

19th Century

Towards the middle of the 19th century, plain leather footwear became the norm. Affordable and durable, it was considered more democratic and silk shoes became more expensive to purchase. Heels also fell from use after the French Revolution.

Women’s fashion replicated the silhouette of a Greek column. Therefore, whites, tans and dark tones of the classical world entered the fashion realm. Consequently, sandals were introduced, although not with great success. Instead, the use of heels and the shape of toes varies with no particular style standing out. Around 1790’s, the square toe was introduced, and remained popular for the next half century.

During the late 1850’s, heels stepped back onto the scene and became the epitome of styling. 30 years later, the square toe completely fell from fashion and was replaced by a rounded shape. The American manufacturing business stepped in to improve the methods and machinery of shoes. As a result, they positioned themselves as the leading footwear manufacturers for the next 50 years.

20th Century

It wasn’t until the 1920’s that black, brown and white footwear took center stage. During the 20th century, the world saw more colours to match evening dresses, as well as become well suited for daytime and nighttime wear. Hemlines began to climb up the leg after World War I, and so the curves of the instep and ankle became more exposes. The boot completely abandoned itself from fashion, although a ‘Cossak’ boot, which is a pull-on style, became successful in the late 1920’s.

During the early 1970's, fashion footwear become heavily focused on footwear. Thanks to more research and attention, the fit and comfort of each pair became a huge focus. Fashion experts worked with designers to pay homage to the style over the past 30 years.
