Audrey Hepburn was a popular Hollywood actress born on May 4, 1929 in Belgium. After the war, Audrey and her mother moved to England to pursue a dancing career. In 1952, she was discovered by the French novelist, Collette in Monaco. Collette insisted that Audrey played the lead role in a Broadway production of Gigi.

Her lack of stage and performance experience was a problem at first, but Audrey won a Theatre World Award for her work. She worked hard to improve, and received many positive reviews about her performance.

Her exposure in Gigi was brought to Hollywood’s attention and helped her to star in a role of Roman Holiday. At the young age of 24, Audrey received an Academy Award for best actress in the movie. She quickly became a highly sought actress, and was signed to a new film, Sabrina. She went on to appear on the screen with leading men of her time.

Working With Children

Despite being a renowned Hollywood actress, Audrey had a change of career to support UNICEF and help starving children. She served as a Goodwill Ambassador from 1988 until her death in January 1993. Cleverly, she used her fame to gain world attention to her cause and represented the agency by travelling widely to help children.

In an interview about what she did for UNICEF, Audrey said: “My task is to inform, to create awareness of the needs of children. It would be nice to be an expert on education, economics, politics, religions, traditions and cultures. I'm none of those. But I am a mother and I will travel”.

Why Was Audrey Hepburn An Inspiration?

Audrey gave up her acting career to support charities and causes. As well as donating and supporting UNICEF, she formed her own charity in 1994, the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund. She spoke for children who couldn’t speak themselves about abuse, education, poverty, slavery, health, human rights and human trafficking.

Throughout everything in her life, she remained humble and blessed. When the second World War started, her father decided to move her and her family to the Netherlands, but unfortunately, the Nazi’s ended up occupying Holland. After the war, she took ballet lessons in London and Amsterdam, and pursued a career in modelling and acting.

Even though she was considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, she didn’t dress provocatively. She used her natural beauty and happiness to earn this title, and never changed her morals or what she looked like for anyone.

Her heart was huge. She faced hardships and obstacles, but always remained true to herself and continued to be a loving woman. She believed that you can find happiness in the smallest things, and not in what possessions you own. Every day, she lived her life to the maximum and always wanted to help other people.
