We are a result of our environment and the people we hang around with, so make it all worthwhile.
In this article, we’d like to address the importance of mingling. Most of our memories and best moments in life are spent with people. To experience more of the world and become a fulfilled person, we’re talking about ways you can come out of your shell.
A Bit About Mingling
Whether you're at a company mixer, navigating a cocktail party, or out at the bar, knowing how to mingle can help you in a variety of instances. Let's learn exactly what it is and why it's important to learn exactly how to do it.
What is Mingling?
The definition of mingling means to interact with a group or individual you don’t already know. It’s a form of getting to know people and make potential friends, or at least acquaintances.
You achieve it by approaching a group of people and getting involved in their conversation. There are certain scenarios when mingling is more acceptable than others as to not appear that you’re interrupting someone’s personal conversation.
Some people may also refer to mingling as a way to meet a partner. For example, you might be “single and ready to mingle”.
Where Do You Mingle?
There are plenty of places to mingle and meet new people. One of the most popular ways is to join a fitness club. We particularly like this situation because you don’t have to have long, in-depth conversations with strangers. Find a group who shares a similar activity to what you enjoy. Strike up general chit-chat with other members by asking about their interests.
If you’re new to mingling, one of the first steps is to strike up conversation in every public place you are. Whether you’re in line at the post office, grocery store, or at a bar, try to start a conversation. We’re always surrounded by people, so there’s no excuse to ignore their presence. It might be uncomfortable at first, but it might be the beginning of a fascinating friendship.
Get more involved in local community events. See what’s happening in your area and attend some of these events which interest you. Rather than spending your time alone, try to sit next to someone who also looks like they’re searching for a friend. Introduce yourself and ask if they have any additional knowledge about the topic. This is a great way for you to develop your communication skills, as well as the chance to learn.
If you’re mingling intentions are to meet a potential partner, there are also places to meet someone. Parties are a great destination because so many people gather in one place, and you can easily find someone who catches your eye. If you have a friend at the party, kindly ask them to introduce you to ease the awkwardness. Head to romantic cities around the world. This includes: Paris, New York and Germany. All of these are great for millennials and adults.
Why is Mingling Important?
Mingling is important because it refrains us from spending our lives alone and resorting to only ourselves. Socializing is an important skill, although it doesn’t always come naturally to everyone. Research has shown that interacting with others can actually train our brains. Through social contact and motivation, it can help to improve your memory formation as well as protecting the brain.
Another benefit of mingling is physical health benefits. By connecting with new individuals, you develop better habits and a more healthful lifestyle. In fact, studies have found that people who don’t participate in social activities are 60 percent more likely to develop a condition called ‘prediabetes’.
Connecting with people – even just though small-talk with strangers – can makes us happier. It can also improve our overall life satisfaction in the long run. Not all of us are constantly socially active, and a lot of time, we may need our own personal space. However, socializing with people enables us to get out of our own heads and thoughts, and experience the real world.
Learning How to Mingle Like A Pro
Small talk is a lot of people’s worst nightmare. However, it doesn’t have to be if you learn the right skills. Excellent minglers show interest in others through their speed and body language. They politely introduce themselves and ask how they are. Making others feel comfortable is a huge part of mingling. If you’re looking over someone’s shoulder and not into their eyes, you’re not giving your full attention.
Here are our top tips for mingling, if you’re looking to improve your socializing skills or meet new people.
1. Respond with More Than a Basic Answer
If a stranger asks us a question, our natural response might be to just answer it and walk away. However, by doing so, you aren’t instigating an in-depth conversation or encouraging a friendship. Most of us answer “how are you? With “I’m fine thanks”, however this type of response can end a conversation. Instead, think beyond the basics and add a bit more detail to the conversation. For example, talk about something fascinating you’ve done today, or a reason which has sparked your mood. As a result, people will respond with a question which quickly develops into a conversation.
Also, it’s important that you actively listen to who you’re speaking with. People love when others listen to them. Really absorb their words and present your body language accordingly. React honestly and be genuine in your response, rather than just polite to hope someone likes you. For example, probe a little deeper with your reply. If someone talks about their career, don’t just respond with a blunt answer, but contribute to the conversation. Do you have a question about their career? If so, speak up and show your interest.
2. Change How You Think About Yourself
We all want more people in our lives, but socializing can be awkward. It’s always easier to meet new people when they approach us, but that’s not always the case. Perhaps you’re attracted to someone, or find someone intriguing – it’s time to approach them.
However, if you think of how awkward you are, you’ll instantly set yourself up to fail. Instead, change your inner thoughts and focus on more positive ones. Why don’t you have the right to talk to someone new? Are you really a bad person? What would be the worst that could happen?
Confident people accept and love themselves. Rather than constantly battling with their personality and appearance, they appreciate that they’re valid in the world. You should think the same about yourself! We completely understand that it’s awkward to approach a stranger and talk to them. But, if you boost your own self-esteem, it’s not so bad. Most importantly, be polite. Ask if you can join their conversation. Or, compliment someone’s appearance if you’re attracted to them.
Deal with your own personal anxiety and worries firstly. Why do you put yourself? Give yourself an emotional hug and complement who yourself, because we all deserve love and happiness.
