Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. At least that’s how the saying goes. And for most people that’s true; a fact that often leads people to start collections of various items. From the mundane (but often valuable) such as stamps and plush toys to the bizarre such as human bones and even various bits of trash, people have collected things for ages. But what do billionaires collect? As it turns out, a bit of everything, really.
Bill Gates – Microsoft billionaire – Luxury sports cars
Who doesn’t love a great sports car? Count Bill Gates as one of those people, who happens to be worth over $103 billion. Credited with founding the Giving Pledge, which attempts to get wealthy millionaire and billionaires to give away at least half their wealth upon their death, or via philanthropy, while they’re alive, Gates’ tastes are expensive.
He loves luxury sports cars and has at least five of them to date. The list includes:
- Ferrari 348
- Jaguar XJ6
- Porsche 911
- Porsche Carrera Cabriolet 964
- Porsche 959 Coupe
As of April of this year, Gates’ car collection is worth over an estimated $650,000.
Bernard Jean Étienne Arnault — LVMS Billionaire — Art
One of three people in the world who have crossed the line into being a $100 billionaire, Arnault is the wealthiest man in Europe. As the chief executive and chairman of luxury goods “god-company” LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton SE, Arnault is able to collect art by the masses. A sampling of his collection includes prints from:
- Jean-Michel Basquiat
- Maurizio Cattelan
- Damien Hirst
- Yves Klein
- Henry Moore
- Pablo Picasso
- Andy Warhol
In addition to the art Arnault owns, he also once owned Phillips de Pury & Company, which is an art-house, and later joined it with Tajan, another art house. LVMH via Arnault later opened an art museum called Fondation Louis Vuitton in 2014.
Kylie Jenner — Youngest self-made billionaire — Bags
One of the Kardashian clan, Kylie Jenner is reportedly worth over $1 billion and the youngest of the billionaires who is “self-made.” And she happens to collect purses. Expensive ones, too. Jenner calls them “a great investment,” according to the report – and a video in which she showed them off. Her bag collection includes such status-symbols as
- Gucci Dionysus
- Hermes Kelly
- Hermes Birkin
- Louis Vuitton Graffiti Speedy
And those are only what we know of what she shows off. Reportedly the entire collection is worth over $440,000.
Jeff Bezos — Of the Amazon Billionaires — Apollo 11
Well-known as the single wealthiest man in the world, Jeff Bezos has a bit more of an interesting collection than the norm. He doesn’t just have an affinity for all things space-related, he actually spent weeks collecting Apollo 11 debris off the seafloor during the Saturn V mission in a submarine. The Apollo 11 mission has a special place in Bezos’ heart. Broadcast on TV when Bezos was a child, he became fascinated with the various sciences.
To date, he’s collected everything from the F-1 engines that powered the moon missions and injectors to turbines and heat exchangers. The Museum of Flight displays one of the F-1 boosters and most of the other artifacts from the Apollo 11. There aren’t any estimates of what this collection is worth, but it certainly is priceless to Bezos and many other Americans.
